The collection is multidisciplinary, but may be particularly strong in one area within your particular hospital or Trust, depending on any specialisation.

The Base-Library Catalogue provides access to the collections of all 23 Base Libraries. There are over 46,000 titles in the collection, equating to more than 87,000 actual items!

For instant access to the Catalogue enter your search term into the Quick Search box above or click on 'Advanced Search' for more search options.

For a quick guide to using the Base-Library Catalogue, please see the 'How To...' pages.

NHS Library Services for Students on Placement
Your placement with the NHS will mainly be in the Birmingham or Wolverhampton area. Placements outside of these areas are primarily in hospitals outside of the NHS and are not serviced by NHS libraries.

Details of the NHS Trust and PCT libraries you can access, with contact details and opening hours, can be found here.

Heart of Birmingham Teaching Primary Care Trust staff access library services through the library at Gee House.

Birmingham East and North Primary Care Trust staff access library services through Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust (City and Sandwell Hospitals) and South Birmingham Primary Care Trust (Moseley Hall Hospital).

South Birmingham Primary Care Trust staff access library services through the library at Moseley Hall Hospital.
How do I join Base Libraries?
Register at your 'home' Base Library. This entitles you to access the collections of all the libraries in the Base consortium.

You will be given a Base Library card, keep this card to use at your next placement if that Trust is part of the Base consortium. Update your details with the library at your next placement.
Base Registration Form
Complete and return the registration form to your 'home' Base library (you will need to present your Trust or Student ID badge in person to register).
PC and Internet Facilities
Hand typing

Computing facilities are provided at many libraries in the Base consortium.

Please contact staff at your 'home' library for further information on access to PCs and for advice on whether the Trust or PCT network will allow you to access BCU resources.

How do I get an 'Athens' password?

Athens is a single login, giving you access to multiple professional academic resources, such as e-books, full text e-journals and health databases. Including those offered by NHS Evidence.

You will already have access to databases and journals through your university Athens account.

An NHS account may give you access to different or additional e-resources. Library staff will be happy to provide advice on resources available through your NHS Athens account.
Training
Please ask in your 'home' library whether training is provided, when you are looking for help with assignments and essays. If they do, it can be a useful insight into what NHS library and information resources can do for you in your future career in the NHS.
Don't Forget...
...you can still use your university library whilst you are on placement.
